After diamonds are mined in their rough form they are divided in two categories. Industrial and gemological. After selection , all diamond crystals destined to be cut into gems are closely inspected by a specialists called the planner. The planner decides in what form and how the diamonds are going to be cut in order to obtain the maximum price for each piece.

Dimensions of a round cut diamond .
For every form there are standards for dimensions that must be respected in order to assure a good interaction with light . When light interacts with a diamond, part of it is reflected on the surface and part penetrates inside the stone to be reflected back through the surface, creating a combination of brilliance and fire. When these parameters are not respected , part of the light will disperse and the diamond will lose it’s beauty.
Still, the planner must keep in mind the end result of the cut in terms of carats in order to obtain the most dollars out of each rough diamond. Since the price of diamonds /carat increases with the increase in size, the industry has set a standard for prices in carat ranges. For more information on this you can read my blog post titled ‘’The price of a Diamond price Vs it carats’’

Taking into consideration the above mentioned aspects, there are situations when the planner must decide in between a better cut or a better yield in carats. This usually happens when a few points ( 0.01 – 0.03 carats) could decide if a diamond falls in the next price/carat category.
This is why it is important to pay attention to the cut of a diamond when deciding to buy it. Always ask for a certificate for diamonds above 0.5 carats . Look for cuts that are very good to excellent even if you have to pay more. Sometimes it is better to go several points down in carats and get a better cut diamond. After all no one will be able to tell the difference in a few points after the stone is set on a ring, the they will pay attention to the brilliance and fire of a diamond.
Do not worry if you do not know how to read a certificate at this point, be part of my circle of trust and I will help you make the right decision.
